Zombies earn point in Shoot-Out defeat

The Zombies went toe-to-toe with league-leading Nice Twice Property and nearly pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the Wednesday Summer League season before falling in a shootout, 4-3, Wednesday night at Walker Ice & Fitness Center.

Nice Twice Property struck first with 1:18 remaining in the opening period as #85 scored with the extra attacker on the ice, finishing a passing play from #13 and #12 to take a 1-0 lead.

The league leaders doubled their advantage early in the second period when #85 found the back of the net again with 7:54 remaining, this time off assists from #12 and #5.

The Zombies answered in impressive fashion. With 4:42 left in the second, Brady VanOverloop (#84) cut the deficit to 2-1, finishing a setup from Evan Linnert (#6). Momentum continued to swing toward the Zombies as Brady struck again with 1:08 remaining, burying a feed from Ryan Kooima (#55) and Ryan Foster (#44) while the Zombies had the extra attacker on the ice, knotting the game at 2-2 heading into the second intermission.

Nice Twice Property regained the lead in the third period with 6:45 remaining when #40 converted passes from #61 and #47 to make it 3-2. Once again, however, the Zombies refused to quit. With 2:27 left in regulation, Moon Jeon (#27) buried the equalizer after a strong passing sequence from Ryan Foster (#44) and Ben Hatchett (#33), sending the game to overtime tied at three.

Neither side could solve the opposing goaltender during overtime, setting up a dramatic shootout. What was expected to be a three-round skills competition turned into an extended battle, as all six shooters in the opening three rounds were turned away. Nice Twice Property missed with #2, #85, and #43, while the Zombies were denied on attempts by Jason Buechler, Ryan Green (#90), and Brady VanOverloop (#84). With the shootout advancing into a fourth round, #61 finally broke through for Nice Twice Property with the night’s only shootout goal. The Zombies needed a response to continue, but Ryan Foster’s attempt was stopped, giving the league leaders a hard-fought 4-3 shootout victory after the shootout went beyond the scheduled three rounds.

Although the Zombies came away with the loss, they matched the league’s top team stride-for-stride, rallying from a two-goal deficit with tremendous determination and forcing a shootout in one of their strongest all-around performances of the season.
