The West Michigan Phantoms returned to Walker Ice & Fitness Center on Sunday evening looking to build on the momentum from their season-opening victory. Despite a competitive effort and several bright spots throughout the lineup, the Phantoms dropped a 5-1 decision to Bent Shafts in Sunday Men’s League action.
The Phantoms entered the contest without Nate Skoboda (#44), Andrew Erickson (#91), and Matt Zehr (#5). The evening also marked the Phantoms debut for defenseman Natalie Nemes (#6), who turned in a steady performance on the blue line and showed strong positioning throughout the game. Matt Myers (#72) also returned to the lineup after spending time in Calgary, providing additional depth and energy for the Phantoms.
Bent Shafts opened the scoring with 8:43 remaining in the first period when #2 finished a scoring opportunity off an assist from #6. The Phantoms responded quickly just over two minutes later. Clay Potochny (#18) generated the offensive chance and found Trevor Zenas (#10), who snapped home the equalizer with 6:07 left in the opening period to tie the game at 1-1.
The Phantoms appeared poised to head into the first intermission tied, but Bent Shafts delivered a crushing blow with just one second remaining in the period. #4 scored off a setup from #2 to give the visitors a 2-1 lead and seize momentum heading into the locker room.
That momentum carried into the second period. Bent Shafts extended their lead early when #2 scored his second goal of the evening with 10:47 remaining, assisted by #10. The Phantoms continued to battle and generated several quality opportunities but were unable to cut into the deficit.
Late in the middle frame, Bent Shafts pulled away. With 2:20 remaining, #2 completed a hat trick off an assist from #17 to make it 4-1. Just eighteen seconds later, #22 added another goal with assists from #18 and #8, extending the advantage to 5-1 before the second intermission.
Despite the four-goal deficit entering the third period, the Phantoms continued to compete hard. Natalie Nemes (#6) and the defensive unit tightened things up in front of goaltender Kevin Wootton (#35), holding Bent Shafts off the scoreboard for the remainder of the night. The penalty kill also came through in key situations after Chris Laux (#15) was assessed minor penalties for interference and hooking in the final period.
While the final score was not the result the Phantoms were seeking, there were encouraging signs throughout the lineup. Nemes looked comfortable in her first game as a Phantom, Myers provided a boost after returning from Calgary, and the team continued to battle until the final horn despite missing several regular contributors.
