PHANTOMS CLOSE REGULAR SEASON WITH 8-7 SHOOTOUT WIN OVER CHICKEN ALFERDA

The West Michigan Phantoms wrapped up the regular season Sunday afternoon at Walker Ice & Fitness Center with a dramatic 8-7 shootout victory over Chicken Alferda, surviving a wild third period and finishing the schedule on a winning note.

The Phantoms entered the regular-season finale without Matt Zehr, Trevor Zenas, Ryker Barber, and Nate Skoboda, but the offense still produced seven regulation goals behind a huge afternoon from Hunter Tuggle, Jason Young, Clay Potochny, and Chris Laux.

West Michigan struck first with 10:31 remaining in the opening period when Hunter Tuggle finished a setup from Natalie Nemes to give the Phantoms a 1-0 lead. Chicken Alferda answered at 7:14 when #43 scored from #63 and #5, then took a 2-1 lead at 4:22 when #43 struck again unassisted.

The Phantoms responded before the first intermission. With 2:04 remaining, Jason Young scored unassisted to tie the game 2-2.

The second period featured the only goal of the frame, and it belonged to the Phantoms. With 9:35 remaining, Young created the opportunity and found Chris Laux, who scored to put West Michigan ahead 3-2 heading into the third.

The final period quickly turned into a shootout before the actual shootout ever arrived.

Chicken Alferda tied the game at 3-3 with 10:32 remaining when #63 scored from #0. Just 46 seconds later, Tuggle answered with his second goal of the afternoon, finishing a play from Clay Potochny and Young to restore the Phantoms lead at 4-3.

Only 29 seconds later, Potochny scored from Tuggle and Young to stretch the lead to 5-3.

Chicken Alferda cut the deficit to one at 6:55 when #63 scored his second of the period from #0 with the extra attacker on the ice. Chris Laux quickly restored the two-goal cushion at 5:28, scoring from Tuggle to make it 6-4.

Again, Chicken Alferda answered. Just 17 seconds later, #0 scored unassisted to pull within one at 6-5.

Tuggle then completed the hat trick with 4:46 remaining, scoring from Potochny to give the Phantoms a 7-5 advantage. At that point, West Michigan appeared to have created enough separation to close out the regular season.

Chicken Alferda had other ideas.

With 2:35 remaining, #43 scored his third goal of the game unassisted, cutting the lead to 7-6. Then, with only 1:38 left, #17 scored from #18 and #43 to erase the deficit completely and send the game into overtime tied 7-7.

Neither team could break through in overtime, sending the regular-season finale to a shootout.

Kevin Wootton made a huge save on Chicken Alferda’s first attempt when #63 was denied. Hunter Tuggle missed the Phantoms’ first opportunity, and Chicken Alferda’s #18 converted in round two to put the pressure back on West Michigan.

Clay Potochny answered with a goal to keep the Phantoms alive.

Wootton then stopped #43, setting the stage for Chris Laux. After already scoring twice in regulation, Laux buried the decisive shootout attempt to give the Phantoms the 2-1 shootout edge and an 8-7 victory.

Tuggle led the offense with a dominant five-point performance, recording three goals and two assists. Young finished with one goal and three assists, Potochny had one goal and two assists, and Laux scored twice before delivering the shootout winner. Nemes added an assist on the opening goal.

It was not the easiest way to close the regular season, but it was certainly memorable. The Phantoms led, trailed, rebuilt the lead, watched it disappear late, and then found a way to finish the job in the shootout.

The regular season ended with another reminder of the Phantoms’ ability to stay in games, generate offense, and respond when momentum swings in the wrong direction.
