Phantoms rally from down three goals to capture 6-3 victory over Chefs

The West Michigan Phantoms saved their best hockey for the final period Sunday evening, erupting for five unanswered third-period goals to erase a two-goal deficit and skate away with an impressive 6-3 victory over the Chefs at Walker Ice & Fitness Center.

It was a tale of two games. For the opening 24 minutes, the Chefs controlled the scoreboard and capitalized on their opportunities, while the Phantoms struggled to generate sustained offensive pressure. But once Chris Laux cut the deficit late in the second period, momentum slowly shifted toward the home bench. What followed was one of the Phantoms’ most explosive periods of the season, as they overwhelmed the Chefs with relentless forechecking, balanced scoring, and wave after wave of offensive pressure.

The Phantoms entered the contest without Matt Zehr, Brad Zehr, Hunter Tuggle, Trevor Zenas, and Sam Schaab, forcing several players into expanded roles. To help stabilize the blue line, West Michigan also called upon former Lakeside Locomotives defenseman Mitch Hoolsema, who was inserted into the lineup for his Phantoms debut. Hoolsema quickly settled into the defensive corps, providing a steady presence on the back end and valuable minutes as the Phantoms overcame their short-handed lineup. His composure and dependable play helped the defense settle in after a difficult opening two periods and played an important role in the team’s dominant third-period turnaround.

The Chefs opened the scoring just 46 seconds into the game when #11 converted an unassisted opportunity with 9:14 remaining in the opening period. The Phantoms generated several chances to answer but were unable to solve the Chefs’ goaltender before the intermission.

The visitors extended their lead early in the second period. At 10:33, #91 finished a setup from #16 to make it 2-0 before #46 struck just over two minutes later off assists from #11 and #1, giving the Chefs what appeared to be a comfortable 3-0 advantage.

Rather than allowing the game to slip away, the Phantoms finally found the breakthrough late in the second. With 2:19 remaining, Chris Laux buried a pass from Kyle Swansegar, cutting the deficit to 3-1 and injecting life into the Phantoms heading into the final period.

That late goal completely changed the complexion of the game.

The third period belonged entirely to West Michigan.

Just 32 seconds into the period, Jason Young redirected a beautiful setup from Ryker Barber and Natalie Nemes to make it a one-goal game. Suddenly the momentum had completely shifted, and the Chefs found themselves defending nearly every shift.

At 7:03 remaining, Clay Potochny forced a turnover deep in the offensive zone and buried an unassisted goal to tie the contest at 3-3. The equalizer ignited the Phantoms bench and brought renewed energy to the entire lineup.

The floodgates then opened.

Only five minutes later, Ryker Barber gave the Phantoms their first lead of the night, finishing another outstanding passing play started by Kyle Swansegar with 1:49 remaining. Less than half a minute later, Adam Porczynski extended the advantage to 5-3 after taking a feed from Matt Myers (#72).

The Chefs barely had time to regroup before the Phantoms struck once more. With 1:04 left, Chris Laux scored his second goal of the evening, again set up by Matt Myers, putting the finishing touches on a remarkable five-goal third period.

Over the final twelve minutes, the Phantoms completely controlled possession, winning races to loose pucks, keeping sustained offensive-zone pressure, and preventing the Chefs from mounting any meaningful push after the game became tied. It was one of the club’s strongest periods of the season and showcased the depth of the lineup despite missing several regular contributors.

Laux finished with two goals, while Barber recorded a goal and an assist. Swansegar and Myers each collected two assists, proving invaluable in filling the void left by several absent regulars. Jason Young, Clay Potochny, and Adam Porczynski each added goals during the decisive comeback, while Natalie Nemes chipped in an important assist from the blue line.

Most importantly, the Phantoms never lost confidence after falling behind by three goals. Instead, they methodically chipped away at the deficit before exploding offensively in the third period, turning what looked like a frustrating evening into one of the team’s most satisfying victories of the season.
