Phantoms score late to send game to the shoot-out; win game 5-4

For the second consecutive week, the West Michigan Phantoms needed more than 36 minutes to decide a winner. Unlike the previous Sunday, however, this time the Phantoms walked away with the extra point, surviving a furious Bent Shafts comeback before earning a thrilling 5-4 shootout victory at Walker Ice & Fitness Center.

The win improved the Phantoms after another gritty Sunday afternoon battle and showcased the resilience that has become a trademark of the club throughout the 2026 season. After building a commanding three-goal lead, watching it disappear in the closing minutes, and falling behind late in regulation, the Phantoms refused to panic. Instead, they dug in, found a late equalizer, and relied on veteran goaltender Kevin Wootton and clutch shootout goals from Ryker Barber and Clay Potochny to secure the victory.

The Phantoms entered the afternoon shorthanded, skating without Natalie Nemes, Shawn DeBoer, Nate Skoboda, and Matt Zehr, forcing the lineup to shuffle once again. Despite the missing regulars, West Michigan came out flying from the opening faceoff.

The early story belonged to Kevin Wootton, making his first appearance since July 15th. Bent Shafts generated several dangerous scoring opportunities during the opening period, but Wootton looked sharp from the outset, tracking pucks through traffic and making several difficult saves to keep the game scoreless while the Phantoms found their rhythm offensively. His calm presence gave West Michigan confidence, allowing the skaters in front of him to settle into the game.

That confidence paid off midway through the first period when Ryker Barber opened the scoring with 9:31 remaining, finishing a setup from Jason Young to give the Phantoms a 1-0 advantage. Barber’s speed created problems throughout the afternoon, and the opening goal energized the home bench.

The Phantoms continued to control much of the play in the second period. At 6:08 remaining, Clay Potochny extended the lead to 2-0 after taking a feed from Trevor Zenas and Hunter Tuggle. Just over three minutes later, Kyle Clark jumped into the offensive zone and buried another scoring chance off assists from Brad Zehr and Jason Young, stretching the lead to 3-0.

While the offense built the cushion, Wootton continued to frustrate Bent Shafts. Several quality scoring opportunities were turned aside during the first two periods, and without his performance, the Phantoms’ lead would have been much slimmer heading into the final frame. His rebound control and positioning were outstanding throughout the afternoon.

Bent Shafts finally found life with only six seconds remaining in the second period when #17 scored off an assist from #12, trimming the deficit to 3-1 heading into the intermission.

Although disappointing to surrender a late goal, the Phantoms still carried momentum into the third period.

The final period quickly turned into one of the wildest stretches of hockey the Phantoms have played all season.

Bent Shafts struck at 7:59 remaining to cut the lead to one before tying the game just two minutes later at 5:58, capitalizing on another offensive rush to erase what had once been a comfortable Phantoms advantage.

The pressure continued mounting, and with 1:26 left in regulation, Bent Shafts completed the comeback when #17 scored his second goal of the afternoon to put the visitors ahead 4-3.

Rather than folding, the Phantoms answered with one final push.

With time winding down, West Michigan pulled Wootton for the extra attacker and kept relentless pressure in the offensive zone. The strategy paid off with only 32 seconds remaining when Chris Laux and Ryker Barber found Clay Potochny, who snapped home his second goal of the afternoon to tie the game at 4-4 and send the home crowd into celebration.

The equalizer capped another outstanding offensive afternoon for Potochny, while Barber and Jason Young continued their productive performances with multiple-point efforts. Neither team could score in the raigning seconds after the Phantoms game tying strike, setting up the Phantoms’ second straight shootout.

Barber wasted little time, scoring on the opening Phantoms attempt. Bent Shafts answered in the first round before Wootton denied the next shooter to keep the shootout even. Hunter Tuggle was unable to convert the Phantoms’ second attempt, but Wootton again came through with another critical save.

That set the stage for veteran forward Clay Potochny, who calmly beat the Bent Shafts goaltender in the third round. One final save by Wootton sealed the victory, sending the Phantoms pouring off the bench to celebrate an emotional 5-4 triumph.

The victory was another example of the Phantoms’ ability to respond under pressure. While allowing a three-goal lead to disappear was far from ideal, the club never stopped competing. Wootton’s outstanding first two periods kept the game under control, the offense answered every challenge when it mattered most, and the Phantoms delivered in the shootout to earn the extra point.
