Chefs 9, West Michigan Phantoms 8 (Shootout)

The West Michigan Phantoms battled through one of the wildest and most frustrating games in recent team history Sunday afternoon, falling 9-8 in a shootout to the Chefs after regulation ended tied 8-8.

Despite dressing a short-handed lineup without Trevor Zenas (#10), Shawn DeBoer (#17), Nate Skoboda (#44), Trent Kik (#88), and goaltender Kevin Wootton (#35), the Phantoms exploded offensively, receiving hat tricks from Hunter Tuggle (#11) and a four-point afternoon from Jason Young (#7). Unfortunately, an afternoon filled with controversy overshadowed an outstanding offensive effort.

The Phantoms found themselves trailing 1-0 early after the Chefs opened the scoring, but Hunter Tuggle tied the game with an extra-attacker goal off a feed from Chris Laux (#15). Jason Young then gave the Phantoms their first lead by finishing a setup from Ezra Gennello (#3). Although the Chefs tied the game midway through the period, Clay Potochny (#18) restored the advantage before Hunter Tuggle scored again in the final seconds of the opening period, giving the Phantoms a 4-2 lead after one.

The second period continued the back-and-forth affair. The Chefs pulled within one before Ryker Barber (#26) answered less than a minute later from Jason Young. Another unassisted Chefs goal again cut the lead before Clay Potochny #18 restored a two-goal cushion with just 49 seconds left in the period, to send the Phantoms into the third period ahead 6-4.

The third period quickly turned chaotic. The Chefs scored just 15 seconds into the frame, but Hunter Tuggle completed his hat trick only 19 seconds later off a Clay Potochny assist to make it 7-5. Matt Myers (#72) extended the lead to 8-5 after finishing a passing play from Jason Young and Ezra Gennello, putting the Phantoms seemingly in command.

The momentum shifted dramatically over the final nine minutes. The Chefs scored three unanswered goals to erase the three-goal deficit and force overtime before ultimately winning the shootout.

The game, however, became increasingly overshadowed by officiating decisions. Throughout the afternoon, the Phantoms repeatedly found themselves on the wrong end of questionable rulings. A blatant hit directly in front of the Phantoms’ bench went unpenalized despite occurring directly in front of the officials. In the second period, a shot that hit the post was ultimately called a goal for the Chefs adding to the frustration. The near official waved the play off, but after the far-side referee—positioned near the blue line—signaled goal, the call was changed and allowed to stand. Video evidence following the game clearly shows no goal and adds to the fact the officials were against the Phantoms the entire game. The sequence became one of several controversial moments in the team’s history at Walker Ice & Fitness. In the third period, the Chefs skated with what appeared to be six players on the ice for an extended 10–12 second stretch while the Phantoms repeatedly tried to alert the officials, yet no too-many-men penalty was assessed. Following the game, video review also appeared to show one disputed play striking the outside of the left post rather than crossing the goal line.

Despite the disappointing finish, the offensive performance was among the team’s strongest of the season. Jason Young led all Phantoms with a goal and three assists, while Hunter Tuggle recorded a hat trick. Clay Potochny added two goals and two assists, Chris Laux contributed two assists, Ezra Gennello added two helpers from the blue line, and Ryker Barber. Barber and Matt Myers each found the back of the net.

The Phantoms were unable to convert on all three shootout attempts, while the Chefs converted the deciding goal to escape with the extra point.
