FROM SPARTA TO THE RECORD BOOK—LONGTIME CAPTAIN TRENT KIK CARRIES THE PHANTOMS’ FORWARD!
Franchise Assists and Penalty-Minutes Leader Returns for Season 62
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The captain is coming back, another direct connection to the Phantoms’ past remains intact and one of the most accomplished players in team history is ready for another season.
The West Michigan Phantoms have officially re-signed longtime captain Trent Kik for the Fall/Winter 2026–27 campaign.
Kik completed last season without recording a goal, assist, point or penalty minute, leaving his remarkable career totals unchanged at 234 goals, 211 assists, 445 points and 475 penalty minutes. One quiet campaign, however, does little to diminish a career that occupies several prominent places in the Phantoms’ record book.
His 234 goals and 445 points both rank second in franchise history, while his 211 assists and 475 penalty minutes remain the most ever recorded by a Phantom. Those numbers reflect a player who has scored, created opportunities, competed with an edge and remained deeply involved throughout multiple eras of West Michigan hockey.
A longtime resident of Sparta, Michigan, Kik has provided the Phantoms with far more than statistical production. Wearing No. 88 and the captain’s letter, he has helped guide changing rosters, welcome new teammates and maintain the identity of an organization that has been playing since 2002.
Kik was born on July 4, a fitting birthday for someone who has spent so much of his Phantoms career standing at the front of the group. While the date may be associated with fireworks, his leadership has been built less on spectacle and more on consistency, accountability and a willingness to represent his teammates season after season.
Kik is also one of only a few active players to have competed at all three primary rinks in Phantoms history: Rivertown Sports, Cedar Rock Sports Plex and Walker Ice & Fitness Center. Each building represents a different chapter in the team’s development, and Kik has been present for all three.
His influence extends throughout the larger network surrounding the Phantoms. Kik has been a longtime member of the Zombies, Lakeside Locomotives and Gong Show, sharing the ice with many of the same players across different teams, leagues and seasons.
That history has made him a familiar and steady presence within the group. When the lineup changes or new players arrive, Kik provides experience that cannot be replaced by a statistic. He understands the team, its personalities and the standard expected from anyone wearing the Phantoms crest.
Kik enters the upcoming season only five points away from reaching 450 for his career. His next assist will extend his franchise record, while every penalty minute—although perhaps less desirable—will increase another all-time mark.
The return of Kik gives the Phantoms an experienced forward, their longtime captain and one of the strongest links between the organization’s history and its future. From Rivertown to Cedar Rock to Walker, No. 88 has remained part of the story.
The captain from Sparta is back, the leadership group remains strong and Trent Kik is ready to guide the Phantoms into Season 62.
WELCOME BACK, CAPTAIN TRENT KIK!
