Team Architect and Goaltender Kevin Wootton Returns to the Crease for Season 62

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The signal is green, the track is clear and the longest-running train in West Michigan Phantoms Hockey is preparing to roll through another season!

The West Michigan Phantoms have officially re-signed goaltender Kevin “Woot” Wootton for the Fall/Winter 2026–27 campaign.

The announcement means Wootton will continue a journey that began with the Phantoms in the fall of 2002. He and forward Matt Zehr remain the only two original players still with the organization nearly a quarter-century later.

Twenty-four years with the Phantoms.

Twenty-four years working for the railroad.

And somehow the man nicknamed “Woot” was destined to spend his life hearing trains say his name!

Woot! Woot!

Wootton enters the upcoming season with unusual career totals for a goaltender: zero goals, 19 assists, 19 points and 18 penalty minutes.

His first career goal may remain somewhere beyond the horizon, but his next assist will give him 20 career points—a mighty respectable offensive total for someone whose primary responsibility is preventing everybody else from scoring.

Yet Wootton’s value to the Phantoms has never been limited to what happens inside the crease.

He is the architect behind the West Michigan Phantoms, helping guide the team from its earliest days through more than 1,000 games and 61 completed seasons. He also manages the team’s website and social-media presence, preserving its history while promoting its players, games and events.

When a roster announcement appears, Woot probably posted it.

When a team statistic needs to be found, Woot probably recorded it.

When the Phantoms need a goaltender, he puts down the keyboard, picks up the catching glove and handles that job, too! (Well Maybe!)

His work between the pipes also extends throughout the Phantoms’ larger hockey family. Wootton has served as the longtime goaltender for the Lakeside Locomotives and Zombies, connecting three teams whose histories, players and friendships have become deeply intertwined.

The railroad connection could not be more appropriate.

The Lakeside Locomotives have their longtime netminder.

The Phantoms have their original architect.

And all three teams have spent years riding with Woot!

Through changing leagues, different arenas, countless teammates and more shots than any goaltender would care to count, Wootton has continued answering the call. His return provides the Phantoms with experience in goal and preserves a direct link to the team’s first season.

As the organization prepares for Season 62, the original goaltender remains in the crease, behind the scenes and at the controls of the team he helped build.

The website is running.

The social-media feed is active.

The goalie equipment is packed.

And the Woot train is cleared for another trip through West Michigan hockey!

ALL ABOARD FOR SEASON 62!

WELCOME BACK, KEVIN “WOOT” WOOTTON!

FEAR THE EYES!
