Veteran Defenseman and Netminder Moves from Substitute Role Back to the Fall/Winter Roster
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — He can patrol the blue line. He can contribute offensively. And if the situation calls for it, he can strap on the pads and guard the Phantoms’ goal.
The West Michigan Phantoms have officially signed defenseman and goaltender Kyle Swansegar for the Fall/Winter 2026–27 season!
After serving as a substitute last season, Swansegar now claims a spot on the Phantoms’ full-season roster. He made the most of his limited opportunities during the previous campaign, scoring one goal and adding two assists while providing the team with valuable depth and versatility.
Those three points boosted Swansegar’s Phantoms career totals to 23 goals, 36 assists and 59 points, along with 26 penalty minutes. With the 60-point milestone sitting directly in front of him, it may not take long for the veteran to add another achievement to his Phantoms résumé.
A native of North Olmsted, Ohio, the 6-foot-1, 225-pound right-handed shooter brings an extensive hockey background to West Michigan. Swansegar played five seasons of ACHA Division II hockey at the University of Toledo, recording 36 goals, 35 assists and 71 points in 145 collegiate games. He also accumulated 111 penalty minutes during his Toledo career
Although listed as a forward during his collegiate career, Swansegar has developed into a dependable defenseman for the Phantoms. His ability to move throughout the lineup—and even step into the crease when needed—gives West Michigan a unique roster option few teams can match.
Need someone to defend the front of the net? Swansegar can do it.
Need another scoring option joining the rush? Swansegar can do it.
Need someone to put on the goalie equipment when the crease suddenly becomes vacant? You guessed it—Swansegar can do that, too!
For a Phantoms organization preparing to enter its 62nd season, the signing adds experience, flexibility and another familiar face to the locker room. Swansegar already understands the team, its players and the tradition that has been built through more than two decades of West Michigan Phantoms hockey.
Last season, he answered the call as a substitute. This season, Kyle Swansegar is officially on the roster—and ready to contribute wherever the Phantoms need him.
The blue line has been reinforced. The crease is covered. And “The Swan” is ready to fly into the Fall/Winter 2026–27 season!
