No. 4 Brings Steady Defense and a Perfectly Clean Career Record Back for Season 62
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The countdown is complete, the launch pad is ready and one of Muskegon’s former Rockets is returning to the West Michigan blue line!
The West Michigan Phantoms have officially re-signed defenseman Sam Schaab for the Fall/Winter 2026–27 season.
Schaab scored one goal last season while once again avoiding the penalty box entirely. The goal increased his Phantoms career totals to two goals, five assists and seven points, with an immaculate total of zero penalty minutes.
That is right—zero!
No hooking. No tripping. No roughing. No misconducts. Not even two minutes for accidentally looking guilty!
A Muskegon native and resident, Schaab developed his game while playing high school hockey for the Reeths-Puffer Rockets. That foundation helped shape him into the dependable defenseman now wearing No. 4 for the Phantoms.
Schaab’s game is not built around chasing headlines or gambling for offense. He provides West Michigan with steady work along the blue line, responsible positioning and a willingness to handle the defensive assignments necessary for the team to succeed.
When an offensive opportunity appears, however, the former Rocket has shown he can still launch one toward the net. His goal last season represented half of his career scoring total and provided another glimpse of the offense he can contribute from the back end.
Need a defender to hold his position? Schaab is ready.
Need a clean breakout from the defensive zone? No. 4 can help provide it.
Need somebody to stay out of the penalty box? At this point, Schaab may not even know where the door is located!
His return supplies the Phantoms with another reliable defenseman as the organization prepares to enter Season 62. While offensive statistics often receive the attention, players such as Schaab provide the stable foundation that allows the entire lineup to operate.
