LITTLE CAESARS 10-13-19

The West Michigan Phantoms etched another historic mark into the team’s seventeen plus year history on Sunday, October 13, 2019, as members of the Phantoms and friends, took to the main ice at Little Caesar’s Arena in Detroit, Michigan.  The twelve vs. twelve skater batter, combined with a goaltender on each end, played against each other in a pre-drafted game that was captained by longtime Phantom Matt Zehr (gray team) and brother Brad Zehr (black team).  The 2:00pm faceoff at the home of the Red Wings, continued the solid-tradition of the Phantoms in playing scrimmage games at some big rinks such as Joe Louis Arena, L.C. Walker Arena, Van Andel Arena and the Little Caesar’s Practice.  This October battle, was the first scrimmage game on the main sheet of ice at Little Caesars Arena for the Phantoms.  During the contest, Team Gray skated out to a 4-0 first period lead, before Team Black would begin an attempted comeback with two strikes in the middle period to claw their way to a 5-2 deficit after two periods.  In the third period, Team Black would tally three goals, but Team Gray would add another two goals to complete the game with a Team Gray 7-5 victory.  Team Gray would receive goals from Skylar Emelander (3 goals), Matt Myers (3 goals) and Jake Blok (1 goal).  Team Black would receive goals from Nate Skoboda (1 goal), Zach Kinney (1 goal), Adam Porczynski (1 goal), Chris Laux (1 goal) and Mike Padget (1 goal).  Nate Skoboda (Team Black) would be ticketed on the lone minor penalty for tripping.  The game was officiated by Walt Clarke and Matt Prieur.  “To be able to have the opportunity to bring great friends, represent our team and scrimmage against each other on Michigan’s biggest stage is very special and a great experience for everyone involved, said Phantom goaltender Kevin Wootton.  One night prior, a Phantom group of 50 spent the evening watching the Red Wings battle the Toronto Maple Leafs at Little Caesars.  “These scrimmage games and group events we are fortunate to be involved in are a great way to celebrate our team’s friendship and team history and come together in a special environment outside of normal men’s league games,” Wootton added.  All members of the scrimmage game, officiating crew and photographers received a special commemorative medal following the game as a way to remember the event.
